How to be a Good Dad

Reading Time: ( Word Count: )

BECOME A BETTER

HUSBAND, DAD, AND LEADER.

Psalm 119: 104-106 “Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I wouldn’t say I like every false way. Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn an oath and confirmed it to keep your righteous rules.”

Only when we live life outside our wants and desires can we truly live life to the fullest. The great commission is a perfect example of living life with a goal outside ourselves, spreading the Gospel, and making disciples of men.

As we turn this concept toward the role of the Uncommen Dad, we see a man who swore an oath to keep God’s righteous rules. Men, our children, are looking at us as examples of how to be and speak. Fair or not, our children look to mimic us when they are young and for our counsel when they get older. That may seem to be a very sobering thought to some. But, I love that our scripture verse talks about how the “Word of God is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

I can take comfort in the fact that if I mimic God and His holy ways, my child will do well to emulate me when they are young. So, likewise, if I stick to my sworn oath to keep God’s righteous rules, my child will do well to seek my counsel when they are older.

If I do not abide in God, my ways are untrustworthy no matter my child’s age. But let’s assume I abide in God and He in me…now what.

Now I look to invest in my child (in my case, my two sons, 24 and 21) to be Holy as God is Holy. God sent me to spread the Gospel with my skillset, and I send you to do the same. I invest in my sons’ walk in Christ to encourage them to read his Word daily, pray for wisdom, and love others as God loves you. I encourage them to always speak with Truth and Grace.

Do I always get it, right? No.

Do I often fail to be the Godly example for them? Yes.

Does God still want to use me? YES!

I pray for forgiveness and wisdom and get right back in fellowship with the God of the universe. Notice the first part of our scripture focus, “Through your precepts I get understanding;

therefore I hate every false way.”

There is an understanding to be had if I follow His precepts. When I fail, “I hate every false way.” But God is Good, and He is Good All The Time!

God knew my weaknesses and still blessed me to be a Dad. So while it’s great to be an excellent example for my sons, I can still be an example when I’m not.

God sent me to be an example to my family, and son, I send you to be an example to yours.
