Uncommen Goals: Leaders

BECOME A BETTER

HUSBAND, DAD, AND LEADER.

The definition of a Leader is: “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country.” What word jumps out at you in that definition? For me, the word that stood out the most was…“commands.” We’ve all been part of a group that when it’s time to pick a captain or leader, it’s not always the best person that is selected. Just because you may be popular, funny or loud, doesn’t mean you are a leader.

When I read that definition, my brain hears, “a person who COMMANDS the respect of a group, organization or country.” I think that is what David had even as a young man.

Notice that Samuel asked Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” as if to say, I do not see a leader among these. David was the smallest, youngest and out doing the most meaningless task there was: tending the sheep. But he was out doing his father’s business. He was in charge of the sheep, and while it wasn’t great, it was what he was tasked to do.

I think many men today think they deserve to be the leader or would make a great leader. My first question would be, what are you basing that on? Have you trained yourself to be a leader of men? Can you inspire a team of men to achieve something more than they can on their own? Do you command respect from a group, organization or country?

Just because you want to be a leader doesn’t mean you may have what it takes to be a leader. But just because you may not have what it takes to be a leader doesn’t mean you can’t learn to become one. Joshua learned at the side of Moses. Timothy gained from the side of Paul. Peter learned at the side of Jesus.

Leader Goals

If you want to learn to be a leader, find a mentor and learn. Don’t show up trying to share your ideas, but rather to listen. After all, you are there to learn from a person who may have a lot more experience in leadership than you do.

If you are a leader, find someone to mentor. Pour into that young man and teach him how to be a leader who can command a group. We each have our roles to play, and the best way to get there is setting Leadership Goals.

Now let’s make this a little more personal. Are you the leader of your family? Or should I say, are you a leader who commands? Not out of fear, but rather respect. Your wife and your children are looking for a leader to support and encourage in times of need. Seek to better yourself so you may be a leader to those around you.

I have often thought about the idea of having a mentor.. but in the end for me I have decided they are called “parents”. My father has been my greatest mentor.. he is not a verbally commanding man but a man with a servant heart.. I would see him as he washed the dishes each evening after dinner.. I would see him sacrifice his great plans for our benefit, I would see him pouring over his bible early in the morning.. he was commanding because of how his life speaks.. and I still find today if our family is in the room and my Dad speaks.. everyone listens because they know that as a man of few words if he does have something to say you’ll be missing out if you don’t listen!
